Week Six

As the sun rises on Monday morning, all participants will find themselves awakening with a sense of purpose. Regardless of where they slept the night before, they’ll find themselves compelled to return to the main meeting hall first thing in the morning.

Approaching the hall, however, they will find a large, swirling mass grey in color looming near the sakura tree. This swirl cannot be approached just yet, but seems to be locked and waiting for something more.

As the last member of the village enters the hall, they will find Lune and Sol at the head of the room. Though they’re together, it’s Sol who speaks up first this time.

"Morning. You've done well purging the corruption in the previous gateway, and we'll be doing the finishing touches ourselves. Thank you for your help. In the meantime, we've got another one for you to explore. It's... kind of huge, so stick together when you can."

When Sol finishes, Lune picks up where they left off.

"Hm... There also appears to be something of a change on the horizon. If you are no longer obligated to those you have been attached to - will you stay by their sides?"

The moment participants leave the hall, they will find that the gateway has changed from grey to white, the opening widening enough for multiple people to step through. The Signs will soon take their leave, and all will remain peaceful once more.

In addition, as the week goes on, everyone will find themselves capable of seeing one another's memories at the simplest form of contact. For those who are closer to one another, they may see a memory the moment they make eye contact, while those who are less familiar may require a slight touch. The memories will feel as though the viewer is experiencing the event themselves.

While it may not be made immediately obvious - there is no partner effect for the week. The houses of the departed partners may disappear, but there is otherwise no bond attaching pairs.

It would've been nice if Miki had left behind instructions, but I don't think anyone was really thinking that far ahead.

Nobody really expects to die, until it's about to happen.

Hah... yes, I suppose so. Every living being is short-sighted in that way.

...Maybe that's something we should all be preparing for, considering what we know now.

Probably.

Though some might find it impossible to fully prepare themselves for, even knowing that it's coming.

Maybe.

[ it's a little hard for kara to understand. granted, he's the next best thing to immortal as long as his sword isn't damaged (or was, back home), but he's still a tool of war, intimately familiar with death and the warriors who have wielded him. most of them had embraced the possibility long before they'd ever picked him up. ]

But they should know by now the possibility is very real, shouldn't they? None of us can really afford to keep denying it.

[it's not so different for him. for a rakshasha to have survived for as long as shess has, in the sura's kill-or-be-killed society, is near impossible—and so, he's keenly aware that at any moment, his long overdue end can catch up to him.

miki's puff is starting to nibble at his bandages now, so he puts it down.]

... Unfortunately so. This was only the most logical conclusion.

[ haha yeah this sucks!

but kara doesn't have anything more to say to that, so he watches the puff silently, and sets the second one down to play with it. do they play? guess they're gonna find out. ]

Are your injuries healing?

[they roll around together, probably.]

Yes. Valvatorez was kind enough to look at them for me. He's becoming quite the medic.

[ satisfied, kara nods. ]

I guess someone has to, while there's still some of us left.

[ maybe kara should try, too - at least for basic first aid. he'd needed lili and feral for that before. ]

It's impressive that no one simply keeled over from all the injuries we seem to accumulate here.

[ kara snorts. ]

Apparently we're all a bit sturdier than we thought.

Haha... it looks like it. Well, it's mostly a good thing, even if it's probably encouraging some of the recklessness.

[ kara looks up at shess with a frown. ]

Knowing that you might die can also make people do things they wouldn't, under different circumstances. If you have nothing to lose, you're more likely to fight twice as hard.

It's a matter of perspective, I think. For something this significant, many people have their own ways of looking at it—sometimes opposite to each other. There isn't really a "one answer fits all" here.

I know. It's not always something you can predict, even when you think you know someone.

[ kara sighs. ]

It's annoying that we have to deal with this.

[he smiles wryly.]

I know. You express your frustration at least once every week.

[ he just gives shess a flat look that says he does not want to deal with that kind of criticism right now, not after this weekend. ]

[not everything is a criticism, kara!! it was just a comment.]

Well, bear with it for a while longer. I think just about everyone here is tired of it.

It's not like any of us have a choice, when the only way to get around it is to die.

Some might consider that the easier option, rather than to endure. Still, let's keep doing our best.

[ he'd told lili as much, hadn't he? he can't go back on that now. ]

If you gave any other answer, I'd be surprised. I'll be holding you to that as well.
