The transition from unconsciousness to the waking world is practically seamless. Though you're certain this wasn't where you meant to end up, for a few brief moments it's hard to grasp the situation and take in your surroundings.

A soft twilight lights your way, casting a glow over the sprawling village that fans out around you. Just outside of the large meeting hall you'll find yourself awakening among several others who have found themselves in this place. There's a sense of peace that looms over the area, the only sounds being the cheerful chirp of a stray bird or two and the babbling brook that runs through the village itself.

Stand up, dust yourself off and set out. There are plenty of places to explore and should you venture far enough you'll even find several little houses throughout the village. It may take some time, but as you check out each house you'll soon come across something that belongs to you...along with something that doesn't. It seems that this new residence is yours to share. As for the village itself, the other buildings appear open and well-stocked, providing you with a variety of amenities to utilize. The paths leading out of the village, however, are guarded by four ornate wooden gates. No matter how hard you try, they will not let you past. It seems that the time isn't right yet.

Speaking of, the only way to truly track the passage of time is by charting the movements of the sun but that can prove to be quite difficult as well. As the sun dips below the horizon and the night sky fills with stars, the bell at the shrine rings out to signal the end of your first day. No one else has arrived. It's only you and these strangers for now.

It seems as though you'll have plenty of time to get acquainted with your fellow companions. Make yourself comfortable; when the time is right, answers will appear.



Welcome to the soft intro of Subdivided! This is your intro mingle and the current conditions will last through the weekend until Monday, June 3rd at which point the weekly log will go up. Your characters will not know anything about the partner system, how powers work or any plot-relevant information until Monday. However, characters are free to discover their power through trial and error and will have access to their item from home immediately.

Please note that an additional top-level to introduce NPCs and Game Mechanics will go up on Sunday, 4 PM EST.

[ Well... Yeah, okay. People looking scared at him isn't very surprising, though the frown on Minato's face is a little more due to concern about her friends. ]

Maybe I can help you look. Where did you last see them?

[stillstands]

Not here.

[ That's nice and blunt at least. ]

We were travelling -- in a city, we were in a car, not--[ She waves a hand a little wildly at everything around her. ]-- here. I don't even remember how I got here.

[compendiem]

[ "Not here" is nice and blunt, and also tells him a lot, like not to bother asking for names and descriptions so they can go around making wanted posters. ]

In a car... Kinda hard to imagine something catching up to you in a car. What's the last thing you remember? Are you hurt anywhere?

[ Did you just get into a car accident and we're all dead, Minato is partially convinced they're all dead ]

[stillstands]

[ All her friends are gooonnnne. But not like, gone gone. ]

I'm not hurt, no. But the last thing I remember was being in the car, and then I was here.

[ ... ] I wonder if we were knocked out?

[compendiem]

Could be possible. The place you were driving... Was the weather bad? Lots of cars on the road?

[ Actually-- ] Was it around midnight? [ The first two questions come out inquisitive; this last one, holds a lot more weight, somehow. ]

[stillstands]

[ She's thinking about it. ]

It was daytime, moving around at night would be reckless. The weather was fine, and the roads were empty so... I don't think anything would have happened to the car.

[ Hm. ]

You don't know anything about how you got here either...?

[compendiem]

...No concrete ideas, but unfounded suspicions, mostly. It being daylight for you kinda dashes that, though.

[ He sighs a little, rubbing at the back of his head. His unfounded suspicions mostly involve him being dead and also her being dead along with everybody else here, but as much as it makes sense to him, it's not the ideal. ]

Well... However it happened, doesn't matter, right? As much as what to do from here.

[stillstands]

R-right... I guess.

But if we know where we started, it might make it easier to figure out where we're going and what we're doing now.

[ She can't really make any assumptions either way. The thought it could be magic, or something otherworldly has barely even crossed her mind. ]

[compendiem]

I guess... Okay. Let's assume we're dead.

[ Because we're 100% dead, no assumptions needed ]

What would you think is going on, and why we're here?

[stillstands]

[ OKAY HOLD UP. ]

Wait-- why would we assume we're dead?

[ ??? ]

I was still alive, I know that much.

[compendiem]

...Why would you assume you're still alive? You were driving, and then ended up here, right?

[ The logical conclusion is that she died and he died and they're both in hell. ]

[stillstands]

Because--

[ ... She frowns. How does she word this? ]

-- I don't think I'd be here if I'd died. Wouldn't it just be nothing, or-- well...

[compendiem]

Nothingness after death?

[ Yeah... He thinks that too, but he's 37% sure he's dead, and being in a place like this doesn't surprise him either. He finds that he can take whatever's thrown at him, and accept it. ]

That's what I believe in too, but... You never know, do you? That's one of life's mysteries.

[stillstands]

[ ... Mm. Let's go with that. ]

Until we die, no. We don't know. I think nothingness after death would be the best option out there, compared to alternatives.

[ ... ]

So until there's nothing, I won't believe I'm dead.

[compendiem]

...Okay. We're not dead.

[ Keep believing that ]

Next scenario... Say we were kidnapped and forced into servant labor. What would we do then?

[stillstands]

[ She will. SHE BELIEVES. ]

Rebel and refuse to follow our "masters".

[ Wow. ]

[compendiem]

[ ...haha ]

That's the spirit. In a case like this, you'd do what you want, wouldn't you?

[stillstands]

If you're in a situation were death seems inevitable, isn't it better to stubbornly try and survive even longer?

[compendiem]

Yeah. But just because we're captive, doesn't mean death is inevitable. If it's the choice between labor and death... stubbornly trying to survive would mean being compliant?

[stillstands]

Depends on whether you count "stubbornly trying to survive" as rolling over and going with what's laid out in front of you, or actively going against it. It would depend on if you thought you want to survive, or live.

[ There's a distinction there. ]

[compendiem]

[ There is a distinction; that much is inarguable. Between death, and death of free will, it depends on the person which they hold highest priority to. Unfortunately for Minato, they weigh about the same to him, and neither of them are very high priorities. ]

For you... You're the sort of person who'd rather be free, in the end, huh? To live.

[stillstands]

If you're surviving, then at some point you'll open your eyes and wonder what the point of everything is.

If you're living then... there's always something to hold on to. Even if everything is falling about around you, there are moments of joy and excitement, or happiness.

[ It's an important distinction. One she's lived through both sides of. ]

Someone had to teach me that. But it was worth learning.

[compendiem]

...That point comes sooner for some people than others, huh? It's something good to learn, though, and to remember...

[ Hmmm. Alright. Enough of that; Minato shakes his head. ]

I get it. I won't say any more about it, so let's go out there and live. There's lots of interesting things out here, after all. Have you seen the stage?

[stillstands]

Yes, but you can pull yourself from one to the other. If you're just surviving, you can start living again.

[ But, yes. Enough of that. ]
