The transition from unconsciousness to the waking world is practically seamless. Though you're certain this wasn't where you meant to end up, for a few brief moments it's hard to grasp the situation and take in your surroundings.

A soft twilight lights your way, casting a glow over the sprawling village that fans out around you. Just outside of the large meeting hall you'll find yourself awakening among several others who have found themselves in this place. There's a sense of peace that looms over the area, the only sounds being the cheerful chirp of a stray bird or two and the babbling brook that runs through the village itself.

Stand up, dust yourself off and set out. There are plenty of places to explore and should you venture far enough you'll even find several little houses throughout the village. It may take some time, but as you check out each house you'll soon come across something that belongs to you...along with something that doesn't. It seems that this new residence is yours to share. As for the village itself, the other buildings appear open and well-stocked, providing you with a variety of amenities to utilize. The paths leading out of the village, however, are guarded by four ornate wooden gates. No matter how hard you try, they will not let you past. It seems that the time isn't right yet.

Speaking of, the only way to truly track the passage of time is by charting the movements of the sun but that can prove to be quite difficult as well. As the sun dips below the horizon and the night sky fills with stars, the bell at the shrine rings out to signal the end of your first day. No one else has arrived. It's only you and these strangers for now.

It seems as though you'll have plenty of time to get acquainted with your fellow companions. Make yourself comfortable; when the time is right, answers will appear.



Welcome to the soft intro of Subdivided! This is your intro mingle and the current conditions will last through the weekend until Monday, June 3rd at which point the weekly log will go up. Your characters will not know anything about the partner system, how powers work or any plot-relevant information until Monday. However, characters are free to discover their power through trial and error and will have access to their item from home immediately.

Please note that an additional top-level to introduce NPCs and Game Mechanics will go up on Sunday, 4 PM EST.

[ what an answer. he notes the weird not-tears, but can he really judge anyone on weirdness? no. instead he just. tries to make a joke about it. ]

You know, you're not wrong about that... but when you're trying to get people off your back, just lying and saying yes would be a better answer.

[globs]

Shut up.

[ it ends up sounding more pathetic than biting, with them the way they are now. They know that, and they hate themself for it a little more. Now they've got another human worried about them... If they were better, tougher, then these things wouldn't happen. ]

If you're going to ask me what's going on, I don't know anything. So...

[leaberator]

Obviously. No one here does. [ very matter of fact ] An' I betcha if you did, you wouldn't be having such a rough time of it hiding out in the shadows.

[ pointing it out is rude? ]

[globs]

That's not true. I'm always here...

[ just. pointing out a fact. they're always trapped in the dark... but that doesn't really matter. Cinnabar's gaze drops again, and they sink back into their knees. ]

Why bother asking if you already know the answer? Neither of us are okay.

[leaberator]

[ he could play obtuse and say "here like this village", but he's not trying to be THAT obnoxious, maybe ]

In the shadows, huh...? Now doesn't that sound familiar.

[ but it's more to himself than anything ]

Yeah, I guess not. But it kinda seems like I'm copin' with it a bit better than you right now. [ this is helping? he adds as an afterthought: ] We're all in the same boat here. Well. Village, but you get the idea. No point in not trying to help each other out.

[globs]

[ maybe they should take an interest in him thinking staying in the shadows is familiar, but they're well past the point of hoping that anyone could understand them. They just stay sitting there glumly. ]

Of course you are. You're with all your human friends. [ and they are alone - not that they usually even have company among other gems. That's a recent thing. ] And I can't help you. If you don't want to get hurt, you should stay away from me.

[ it doesn't sound like a threat, despite the wording - more of an actual warning. ]

[leaberator]

[ ... hmm. denizen of the dark, and not human, huh? interesting ]

Hey, I'm keeping my distance enough. [ it's true he hasn't moved closer, but that's a very literal interpretation of "stay away from me" and he knows it ] So what are you? If you're not human.

[globs]

Ugh. You're all so stubborn...

[ they just want to be alone! They're sure that would be best for everyone. ]

Can't you tell by looking? I'm a gem.

[leaberator]

[ ... ???? he tilts his head to the side ]

Nope. Never even heard that term before. And you don't look especially rocky to me.

[ just kill him ]

[globs]

[ that only seems to puzzle them more. Maybe it's because they're wearing the white powder on their skin? Even so, their hair looks regular. Right? ]

What does that even mean...?

[ at least it's a distraction from their SADNESS!! They finally lift their head up to look at him properly, wiping their tears away with the back of their hand. ]

... I really shouldn't have to explain this, but fine. You're an animal, so you're full of soft parts and blood. Gems aren't like that. We're made of stone.

[leaberator]

Huh. So, would you say you're a down-to-earth person...?

[ no one thinks you're funny, lea. bad jokes aside: ]

Thanks for the breakdown. I've met a lot of people [ and non-people, he doesn't say ], but I can't say I've ever met one of literal stone yet.

[globs]

[ that joke...... sucked.......... they give him the most unimpressed glare before moving on and pretending it didn't happen. ]

Yeah, well... I've never met any animals smart enough to talk before. I thought humans all died out thousands of years ago.

[leaberator]

Hmmm... Nope. We're still alive and kicking, as far as I know. Maybe that's just the case for your world?

[ what's a world order, can you eat it ]

[globs]

There are other worlds...?

[ it's hard to imagine - but not impossible, given what they know about the universe. It would explain the current situation, as much as it can be explained. ]

[leaberator]

Well, yeah. Every star in the sky is another world. I've been to a bunch of 'em myself.

[ really should not be saying that to anyone, but, y'know, whatever ]

Never been to this one, though. Then again, it doesn't look like anyone has ever been to this one at all.

[globs]

[ He's been to other worlds? Could humans do that? If that's the case, then they really might still be out there on other worlds. It is... not a relief, really, but slightly comforting, having bits and pieces of their current situation begin to make more sense. They're still alone and confused, but information always makes them feel a little better. ]

That's not possible. Someone had to build all those buildings out there.

[leaberator]

Yeah, but there's no one living there. And they were all made to house... the exact amount of people who are here right now. Whoever built those must be the people responsible for bringing us here in the first place.

[globs]

[ if they'd stopped to count the houses, they'd disagree and point out there are way more people than there are places to sleep. But they didn't, because they were busy panicking and looking for a place to hide. Oops. ]

... So you think someone built houses on an empty world just to put us in them? That's creepy. Is that normal for humans?

[leaberator]

[ that's a good thing because i, a fool, worded myself badly,

but lea looks like he's not sure if he should be offended at that question or not? ]

Not as far as I know, but it's not normal for anyone to pick up a bunch of people and shove them in an empty world in the first place. I don't think the furnishing of it is the creepiest part.

[globs]

[ they're used to their friends being taken away, they suppose. Cinnabar is quiet for a moment. Somehow, talking to this guy has taken the edge off their panic. Maybe it's because he's so damn calm - it's hard for them to keep freaking out when the other party's offering nothing to provoke them. They're left to consider the current situation on a more serious level, instead. ]

It might be the Lunarians. They've been kidnapping gems for longer than I've been alive. If they found out a way to go to other worlds, then I wouldn't be surprised if they took humans, too.

[ Cinnabar remembers how they were apparently using the Admirabilis, too. It doesn't seem out of the question. ]

[leaberator]

[ that's as interesting a notion as any, and Lea kinda perks up in curiosity. it helps that the guy (gem?) he's talking to seems a lot less prickly now. ]

They've been kidnapping gems? Why?

[globs]

Who knows... [ they sigh. thinking about this is going to stress them out, too. ] I heard that they're using us to try and make their "machine" work again. But the one who told me that is a liar, and a fool. I can't trust what they tell me.

[ they shake their head. ]

It's complicated. You wouldn't understand all of it, since you're not a gem... But I think they could use humans for the same purpose as gems. [ a pause. ] ... It's just a guess, though. It's not like I know...
