Week Zero

The transition from unconsciousness to the waking world is practically seamless. Though you're certain this wasn't where you meant to end up, for a few brief moments it's hard to grasp the situation and take in your surroundings.

A soft twilight lights your way, casting a glow over the sprawling village that fans out around you. Just outside of the large meeting hall you'll find yourself awakening among several others who have found themselves in this place. There's a sense of peace that looms over the area, the only sounds being the cheerful chirp of a stray bird or two and the babbling brook that runs through the village itself.

Stand up, dust yourself off and set out. There are plenty of places to explore and should you venture far enough you'll even find several little houses throughout the village. It may take some time, but as you check out each house you'll soon come across something that belongs to you...along with something that doesn't. It seems that this new residence is yours to share. As for the village itself, the other buildings appear open and well-stocked, providing you with a variety of amenities to utilize. The paths leading out of the village, however, are guarded by four ornate wooden gates. No matter how hard you try, they will not let you past. It seems that the time isn't right yet.

Speaking of, the only way to truly track the passage of time is by charting the movements of the sun but that can prove to be quite difficult as well. As the sun dips below the horizon and the night sky fills with stars, the bell at the shrine rings out to signal the end of your first day. No one else has arrived. It's only you and these strangers for now.

It seems as though you'll have plenty of time to get acquainted with your fellow companions. Make yourself comfortable; when the time is right, answers will appear.

Welcome to the soft intro of Subdivided! This is your intro mingle and the current conditions will last through the weekend until Monday, June 3rd at which point the weekly log will go up. Your characters will not know anything about the partner system, how powers work or any plot-relevant information until Monday. However, characters are free to discover their power through trial and error and will have access to their item from home immediately.

Please note that an additional top-level to introduce NPCs and Game Mechanics will go up on Sunday, 4 PM EST.

[He assesses her for a few seconds before he shrugs casually.]

It's a kind of martial art. [The chances of Emma ever learning what Japanese anything is are low in his opinion, so it's fine.]

[Hm.]

Why did you pause? Is it unusually deadly or something?

[i hate this]

It's a lesser-known art but it's not something to mess with. Having it on my scroll is really dangerous. But it's pretty lethal.

[She seems to accept that, although she does give his scroll another curious glance.]

Pretty varied skill set you've got.

[This time, he smiles.] You think? [He looks back to his scroll.] Some of these are a little ridiculous but most of them make sense.

Which are the ridiculous ones?

[He's pointing at "terrorizing his seniors" and "reading a room."] Those seem pretty subjective to me.

Especially the reading a room thing. Like, how long did they have to watch you to figure out that's what you were doing?

A little while. [It makes sense given what's happened especially recently, but that's still not great.] Either that or they're misunderstanding something.

[She gestures to 'outdoorsman skills' on her own scroll.]

I haven't had to use those for over a year. So... At least that long, and across several continents, which is terrifying.

[There's a very, very tiny instance where he perks up just a little. Like not because of outdoorsman skills because ew, no thanks, but the word "continents" catches his attention.]

It could be multiple people working together then. [He's also used to networks around the world, so.] Where have you traveled?

I was backpacking through South America until... A year and a half ago, or close to that. I was in Guatemala before I moved back to the States.

[There's a nod, but he's never been to Guatemala so he can't commentate on that. Instead, he's pondering.]

Backpacking? As in...no hotels or anything?

I had a small tent, but... No. No hotels.

[A beat.]

Why?

[Because that sounds like a lot of effort that's why.]

Why would you do that? [There's zero judgment here, he's actually just curious. And maybe a little judgey, but hey.]

[...]

Eh, it’s kind of a long story. Not that interesting.

[That means it's definitely something and he raises an eyebrow.

But ah. If he needles her for that, he'll have to explain things? Never mind!]

If I get bored here, then, I know who to find for a story.
