week one: trial
Week One: Trial
27 in Competition
27 in Competition
It may be difficult to sleep with the light shining so brightly throughout the night, but the participants can rest easy knowing they will not be plagued by unwanted, disturbing dreams. Early the next day, a bell chimes and all will feel compelled to enter the main meeting hall.
The hall looks mostly the same as it always has, the two thrones for Lune and Sol at the head of the room and scrolls hanging from the walls. The metal box sits on a table near the front, along with a glass box perfectly centered before the benches in the room. Now that the trial is in session, Tokidoki, Nana, and Junna's coffins are open, and their bodies will be available for examination.
Lune and Sol are seated in their thrones, patiently waiting for the last participant to settle. Sol remains quiet, looking over to Lune to allow them to speak first.
"Even if it is a rather daunting task ahead of you, I hope that each of you will not lose hope. One step at a time, one step at a time. It is not hopeless."
When they finish, Sol sits up a little taller in their seat to address everyone.
"I'm only going to say this once. I know it's not an ideal situation, but...the votes count, and the universe only gives one warning. Can we try not to repeat last week?" There's a pause. "You have nine hours. Let's start."

Hello, everyone, and welcome to the second trial!
We'll go over a few notes briefly as we will be playing this trial a bit differently than other games.
As noted, there was no investigation period on Friday. However, today participants will have the chance to investigate areas in the game setting as they see fit! This can be done by providing the name of the location you want to visit to the host header comment. To help with the ease of the trial and for IC mechanics, only one location may be visited at a time. In addition, these locations can be manipulated and adjusted upon request to test theories and solve puzzles, so please feel free to ask if you're searching for clues! Your host will also be accompanying you on these visits.
Most importantly, before the trial is over, please place your character's vote over on the voting page. Voting will close at 9pm EST/6pm PST, and will serve as our activity check for the week, so please be sure you get your vote in before it ends unless you have contacted us previously.
If you have any questions at any time, please let do us know by pinging us on Discord! Dana and Ty will be in the chat and available for all questions. Thank you, and have fun!

week one execution.
As the morning rolls in, a quiet unsteady feeling fills the air of the village. The light around the Corrupted's confinements remains faint, keeping its power in tact for a bit longer.
The moment the sun reaches the highest point in the sky, a faint bell chimes and all will feel compelled to return to the main meeting hall.
When all are gathered, Lune and Sol will enter the room escorting Futaba. The corruption slowly seeps from her as the Signs bring her to the front of the crowd.
Stepping aside, Sol leaves Lune to speak.
"On this day, we must cleanse the darkness that has manifested in Futaba. One of your number has volunteered to complete the task.
If you would please step forward."
Even if it's phrased as a gentle request, Futaba will find herself without much choice as the light that encased her home will encourage her limbs forward if she does not comply. In addition, they will wait for Minato to approach as well.
CLEANSING: FUTABA;

I hope you did enjoy the game.

[ Minato stops before her, peering into her eyes and trying to peer past her glasses for somebody more. His voice his quiet, not addressing the audience but words for Futaba- darkness- corruption- whoever it is standing before him. ]
Was it fun?
no subject
[ There's mirth in her expression but the glasses hide the deadness in her gaze. It seems as she's already given up despite the act she's putting on. ]
The chaotic end was only missing accompanying music to make it truly a sight.
no subject
[ He sits down on the ground, back to the audience, setting a puzzle box before him before motioning her to sit too. ]
no subject
[ she does, however, glance at the box in curiosity. Even Shadow Futaba can't help but be drawn to the call of puzzles ]
One more for the road?
[ at least she sounds amused ]
no subject
One more for the road. Like how sometimes there's mini-games during the credits at the end, right?
[ It's all hers. He leans back, knees bent and hands sliding into his pants pockets. ]
no subject
[ Despite still talking, her hands are already busy at work confidently sliding through the first handful of steps. Give it a few more moments and she'll be absorbed in unlocking the rest of it, the steps familiar as her own opened puzzle box from before. ]
no subject
[ Or, at least, a better ending than the default game over, head on the ground and blood pouring across the stage. Minato draws his knees a little closer to his chest, resting his cheek on top of them as he watches Futaba work at the box. He won't interrupt, won't do anything until she manages to open it- he knows she will. ]
no subject
[ click click click, it's closer to being opened than yeeted across the room like certain other peoples boxes. The puzzle is easy after already done this, and the muscle memory is still fresh within her memory. With a flourish, the last piece is locked into place and-]
....!

You did it. Congrats. Why don't you try it on?
no subject
[ her first instinct is to throw it in his face but perhaps the light is close enough that instead she picks it up, delicately arranging it upon her hair like a crown fit for a queen. What do you think, Minato? ]
no subject
[ And he thinks she looks beautiful, reaching up to help her steady the crown on her head, smoothing down the flyaways of her hair, and
with one hand, plunging a needle into the side of her neck, straight into the jugular.
He hums kimi no kioku under his breath, the ending theme that was Futaba's last wish. ]

Goodnight, Futaba. ]
AFTERMATH;
Cinnabar, Valvatorez, Grim Eyes, and Julius in particular will find themselves called toward the blackness, their most negative and repulsive emotions brought to the forefront of their mind. Every vice of hatred, jealousy, contempt, beckoning them as their hearts are vulnerable without their partners -
Until a single light seems to be cast from above, brought into the very center of the darkness, and when the blinding nature of it clears, the bodies of both the Corrupted and the victim are gone, leaving only Sol and Lune. A light encases the four, protecting them from further temptation until the glow dims into nothing.
Sol speaks next:]
Without bonds, hearts are vulnerable to a great darkness. You have one of your own to thank for the formation of new partnerships, and the ability to be saved by the light.
[Lune speaks up as well, a smile evident in their voice:]
Did I not say to have faith? Splendid, splendid.
[Julius and Grim Eyes are now partnered. Cinnabar and Valvatorez are now partnered. With that, both NPCs take their leave, but the lanterns continue to float peacefully if others wish to speak with them.
Peace returns to the village, if only for so long.]
no subject
... I'm still here.
[ ... they sound slightly disappointed.
Their eyes eventually land on Valvatorez, but they don't know what to say to him, and so, they glance away again. ]
no subject
He's stopped breathing, his entire body goes still once the new partnership is forged.
It's going to be fine.
At least another week of this.]
So we are.
no subject
... Sorry.
[ sorry that he's stuck with them as a partner. He doesn't deserve it. ]
no subject
Now she has a new partner. Grim Eyes turns to Julius:]
I'll be tying you to your bed on the night the darkness happens, just so you know.
[Is she serious. Who knows]
no subject
All at once it drains out of him as he snaps that particular metaphorical lid closed, compartmentalizing and locking down any of this recent brush with the darkness. It's all still a little too raw by the time he collects himself enough to focus on his surroundings, so instead of responding in kind he's more than his fair share of stiff as he answers: ]
So if I end up being chosen as a victim, I won't be able to fight back.
Thank you, then, for your concern.
no subject
[As if she could do anything. She knows she can't. But she wants to at least pretend she has a way to do it]
no subject
[ He has tact enough to keep him from mentioning that exact fact- that for all her good intentions and posturing now none of this is actually going to do much good when they're all forced to sleep. ]
