The transition from unconsciousness to the waking world is practically seamless. Though you're certain this wasn't where you meant to end up, for a few brief moments it's hard to grasp the situation and take in your surroundings.

A soft twilight lights your way, casting a glow over the sprawling village that fans out around you. Just outside of the large meeting hall you'll find yourself awakening among several others who have found themselves in this place. There's a sense of peace that looms over the area, the only sounds being the cheerful chirp of a stray bird or two and the babbling brook that runs through the village itself.

Stand up, dust yourself off and set out. There are plenty of places to explore and should you venture far enough you'll even find several little houses throughout the village. It may take some time, but as you check out each house you'll soon come across something that belongs to you...along with something that doesn't. It seems that this new residence is yours to share. As for the village itself, the other buildings appear open and well-stocked, providing you with a variety of amenities to utilize. The paths leading out of the village, however, are guarded by four ornate wooden gates. No matter how hard you try, they will not let you past. It seems that the time isn't right yet.

Speaking of, the only way to truly track the passage of time is by charting the movements of the sun but that can prove to be quite difficult as well. As the sun dips below the horizon and the night sky fills with stars, the bell at the shrine rings out to signal the end of your first day. No one else has arrived. It's only you and these strangers for now.

It seems as though you'll have plenty of time to get acquainted with your fellow companions. Make yourself comfortable; when the time is right, answers will appear.



Welcome to the soft intro of Subdivided! This is your intro mingle and the current conditions will last through the weekend until Monday, June 3rd at which point the weekly log will go up. Your characters will not know anything about the partner system, how powers work or any plot-relevant information until Monday. However, characters are free to discover their power through trial and error and will have access to their item from home immediately.

Please note that an additional top-level to introduce NPCs and Game Mechanics will go up on Sunday, 4 PM EST.

[ Nana is here for the bananas, Minato is here for the bread. He hears Nana talking to herself in the kitchen, and pokes his head in to see what's going on. ]

...Are there only raw ingredients in here?

[ Are people like him going to starve if Nana dies week 1 ]

[Wow no starving on the banana's watch, gosh.

Also not expecting company, Nana glances over her shoulder with a quiet look of surprise before she shakes her head, expression melting into a polite smile]

I hadn't checked yet, but I can look for you.

[She's going to be busy in here for a while anyway. Might as well be useful while she's here!]

[compendiem]

[ Minato shakes his head, stepping in to park himself in front of the fridge. ]

...It's okay. I don't mind taking inventory. You look busy. Cooking while distracted can be bad.

[ Also he would feel useless standing around while Nana double-duties baking bread and also taking stock of everything in the kitchen. It's something for him to do, make himself useful. ]

[daibanana]

Yes, I guess you're right.

[He makes a good point; her banana bread would be ruined if she tried juggling ten different tasks at once. She'll move so she isn't impeding his search, then, though she continues to face him to avoid seeming impolite]

Given how rural this village is, I hadn't thought there might be food already prepared.

[compendiem]

I'm kinda wondering whose house we're invading, and what they'll say when they come back. Like... Do you know that story with the bears?

[ The girl gets eaten, he thinks. She deserved it. ]

[daibanana]

The bears...?

[All signs pointing towards a "no", she has no idea what he's talking about.]

[compendiem]

[ Wonderful, he loves telling stories. ]

Once upon a time, there was a family of bears living in the woods. They'd taken over an abandoned cottage, and made themselves at home. One day, a little girl gets lost in the woods after chasing a white rabbit. Luckily for her, she comes across the cottage, and finds that it is made of cookie and candy. While she eats parts of the house, a wolf comes out and—

[ ... ]

Wait, I think I skipped something...

[daibanana]

[-- Okay she's super sorry about this but Nana ends up giggling.

Helplessly.

She doesn't know the story of the bears, but uh, some of those story beats sounded awfully familiar]

The wolf comes out pretending to be her grandmother, and the little girl notices how big her grandmother's paws, nose, and teeth are, perhaps?

[compendiem]

[ Oh. Minato leans back on his heels, amusement teasing at his eyes. ]

So you do know the story. That's it, the wolf comes out pretending to be her grandmother, and at that moment, the bears come back too. The bears, uncertain of whether the wolf or the child had been eating their house, attempts to kick them both out. In self defense, the wolf takes a huge breath, and blows the house down, running away from the wreckage. Do you remember what happens next?

[daibanana]

[She listens intently, nodding along as if being given a lecture. And when faced with that question, Nana presses her hand to her cheek in deep thought]

Hmm... let's see... I think a group of nearby pigs hear all the ruckus and come to see what's wrong. They're builders, and promise to rebuild the bears' house if they can trade for some porridge.

But the bears want their house to be made of candy still, and all the pigs have on them are sticks, straws, and bricks. Not very tasty.

[compendiem]

The bears were affronted by the pig's audacity, and they go in for the kill. Horrified, the young girl flees the scene of the crime as well, happening upon a beanstalk growing in the middle of the woods. This, she thinks she could climb, and maybe see her house from way up high, so she can go home.

[daibanana]

But even as she climbs and climbs, she can't see her house. Instead, she finds a magical path that takes her to a huge castle in the clouds -- and inside there are a bunch of golden eggs, sparkling in the sun. Her family doesn't have much money to their name, so she thinks maybe she can sell them once she gets back home.

What she doesn't know is a giant lives there, and he can smell her! He'll smash her up and spread her on toast if she's not careful.

She tries to take one of the golden eggs, but it's much heavier than she thought it would be. Instead of picking it up, she decides to roll it across the ground and off the cloud, to topple over the edge and down to the ground below. The rest of the bears' house may have gotten crushed by it, but they lay claim to the gold to buy a new house. In the following years, the bears and the girl fight out a long legal battle over the ownership of the gold.

And they all lived happily ever after~!

... Well, some more than others.

[clapping her haaaaands because that was great and the smile on her face couldn't get any bigger]

What a good story.

[ Was it a good story??? I/Minato can't even remember what the point of it was, why he needed to educate Nana about bears in the first place. ]

Yep. It's one of my favorites.

[daibanana]

[It was a great story!

... Even if Nana also forgot the point of it all]

Is it? You have quite a talent for telling them.

[compendiem]

Thanks. I had a good friend, back home, who was writing a story... He really gave it his all, so I thought I wanted to try too.

[ It was as equally morbid as Minato's version of the story, so he takes comfort in the fact that he hadn't gone too off the rails. ]

You too. You have a knack for it. I appreciated the help.

Well, I do study theatre.

It helps even when crafting stories. You have to embrace the spotlight if you want to do well.

[compendiem]

I prefer staying out of the spotlight, if I can... But if you have more stories, I'd be there to listen.

[ Also. How is that bread coming along? Hopefully Nana hasn't stuck anything in the oven, and Minato's whole roundabout way of saying he'll look for supplies so Nana won't be distracted, didn't actually distract her even more. ]

[daibanana]

That's very nice of you, sir~

[Okay he looks too young to be a "sir", honestly, but she doesn't know his name and that's the best lead-in she can think of to introducing themselves]

I'm Nana, by the way. Daiba Nana! It's a pleasure to meet you.

[Also that bread is very close to being done, and don't worry -- Nana's eyes always manage to stray back to the oven every couple of seconds, waiting patiently for the timer to go off]

I'm Sir Arisato Minato. But just Minato is fine, too.

[ bless Nana, but also I hate captcha so!!!! Minato hangs around until the bread is done and tries to convince Nana to share some of it and probably burns the roof of his mouth on a piece or something but it's delicious and Nana is the best. ]

[AND THEN THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER AND NO ONE DIED, THE END.
