Week Zero

The transition from unconsciousness to the waking world is practically seamless. Though you're certain this wasn't where you meant to end up, for a few brief moments it's hard to grasp the situation and take in your surroundings.

A soft twilight lights your way, casting a glow over the sprawling village that fans out around you. Just outside of the large meeting hall you'll find yourself awakening among several others who have found themselves in this place. There's a sense of peace that looms over the area, the only sounds being the cheerful chirp of a stray bird or two and the babbling brook that runs through the village itself.

Stand up, dust yourself off and set out. There are plenty of places to explore and should you venture far enough you'll even find several little houses throughout the village. It may take some time, but as you check out each house you'll soon come across something that belongs to you...along with something that doesn't. It seems that this new residence is yours to share. As for the village itself, the other buildings appear open and well-stocked, providing you with a variety of amenities to utilize. The paths leading out of the village, however, are guarded by four ornate wooden gates. No matter how hard you try, they will not let you past. It seems that the time isn't right yet.

Speaking of, the only way to truly track the passage of time is by charting the movements of the sun but that can prove to be quite difficult as well. As the sun dips below the horizon and the night sky fills with stars, the bell at the shrine rings out to signal the end of your first day. No one else has arrived. It's only you and these strangers for now.

It seems as though you'll have plenty of time to get acquainted with your fellow companions. Make yourself comfortable; when the time is right, answers will appear.



Welcome to the soft intro of Subdivided! This is your intro mingle and the current conditions will last through the weekend until Monday, June 3rd at which point the weekly log will go up. Your characters will not know anything about the partner system, how powers work or any plot-relevant information until Monday. However, characters are free to discover their power through trial and error and will have access to their item from home immediately.

Please note that an additional top-level to introduce NPCs and Game Mechanics will go up on Sunday, 4 PM EST.

Yeah, well, this thing needs an update. I retired a while back. [ on assassinations or babysitting? axel elaborate-- ] Though I guess that means we've got the babysitting part in common.

[ he elaborated in a callout. thanks buddy ]

[ what does that mean, julius. ]

Well, having retired from a job doesn't necessarily mean you lose all the skills associated with it. [ still he cants his head, and one hand finds its way to his hip. ] So I take it the most of what you do these days is babysitting, presumably?

[leaberator]

[ for some reason, that makes him laugh ]

Sorta, but I think everyone involved would get pretty mad if I called it that. I guess the real deal is I'm ... sorta in-between jobs.

[ waiting on the next world saving assignment, more like, but. ]

[ he doesn't much react to the laugh, figuring it's not really directed at him, but. ]

Ah, so you're a freeloader.

[ 'not-babysitting' and being in between jobs = mooching off of friends' goodwill while justifying your keep with odd errands, right. ]

Yeouch. Are you always that judgmental to people you just met?

[ freeloader... the best possible life ]

[ deadpan: ] If I said yes would it make you feel better?

[ but he shrugs, a little. ]

If it helps, it makes sense to me that after... Retiring from something like that that you'd try to take some time to get your head back on straight.

[leaberator]

Not when you offer it like that.

[ but he sounds more amused than anything. ]

You'd think so, right? But that's not quite what happened. The whole thing's a pretty long story.

Hm.

[ and there it is again, that considering, vaguely dismissive, vaguely thoughtful noise. ]

Are you sure you're actually retired, then, as opposed to repurposed? ... Redirected?

[leaberator]

I think if I did any of my old stuff with my new crowd, I'd get my butt kicked seven different ways.

[ but that's not a no on repurposed ]

Maybe for good reason, though it isn't as if I'd know. [ humor as a coping mechanism, check. mildly: ] I don't know what your history is, or what sorts of figures you've been assassinating. You could have spun it all as you taking out corrupt despots and dictators and no one would have batted an eye.

[ so this all has been very enlightening so far. ]

[leaberator]

... Yeah, I could've, I guess. [ he hadn't really thought about that, because he associates all of that too deeply with his list of many, many mistakes, and so he scratches the back of his neck with a sigh ] Never been called out by someone that I could've lied more, though. So that's new.

[ and also enlightening in its own way. ]

It says something about your sense of integrity, at least. [ or guilt, or any number of things, but. ]

The story of how you got into babysitting from 'the icky jobs' sounds like an interesting one. Accidental, I'd presume?

[ since he said he didn't quite retire per se and all. ]

A good something, I'd hope.

[ but it's more the guilt. still, he gestures vaguely at the question ]

Kinda related, actually. But I wouldn't call it interesting.

Don't tell me you killed someone, then felt guilty and took in their orphans.

[ 'kinda related.' ]

[leaberator]

What? No.

[ unless xion counts as vexen's-- you know what? no. ]

That's way too dark. How do you even look the kids in the eyes after that kinda stuff?

[ again, we're just not addressing vexen ]

[ somewhere not here, the vexen muse I have is rearing up to deliver an indignant tirade on how xion is a masterwork of research, you unappreciative-- ahem.

anyway. a brow just raises, minutely. ]

Very carefully, though if you're lucky they won't remember it. [ his delivery is impeccable, really. but more seriously, ] You said they were kind of related. What was I supposed to think?

[leaberator]

[ can't hear the vexen over the sound of lea raising xion and not acknowledging him at all

he shrugs ]

That they're both part of a long story I don't really wanna get into?

[ a beat, and then he inclines his head in the smallest of nods. ]

Fair enough.

If you had your way of it, what would your profile say, then.

[leaberator]

Nothing. [ a bit. too blunt and reflexive there, but. ] That stuff isn't really anyone else's business. Besides, I prefer to make my own first impressions.

Funny. Another thing we apparently have in common. [ babysitting and now this, will wonders never cease. he picks up on the reflexiveness, but doesn't comment. instead, after a moment: ]

You're free to, you know. Introduce yourself, that is.

[ 'do you prefer axel or lea.' ]

[leaberator]

[ he looks confused for a second, looking at his scroll, before he-- ]

Ah, right. Well, either one's fine, but-- Axel's more of a... long-standing nickname. [ a nickname that's longer than his actual name? ] My only request is that you get it memorized.

[ mauyn why do you do this to me ]
