Week Zero

On Monday morning, the sun rises on the sleepy village, and when the first ray of light touches the gates at each corner of the village, the previously tightly sealed doors open.

The barriers around the village fall, and leave it entirely open. Each cardinal direction will have a path exiting the village, taking the curious explorers who follow it on an adventure to new territories to be explored. They’ll find that each location that they arrive in appears to be associated with one of the elements. As the Signs had explained the day before, each of the participants in the game possesses an elemental assignment, whether they are aware of it or not.

When they approach the elemental areas, they’ll find themselves more in tune with their new powerset, as if the location invites them to take them out for a spin. The new areas appear to be perfect for training and learning how to use the new skills, or maybe if you’re curious you can discover which of those listed powers you’ve been granted.

Just try not to hurt yourself while you’re out there.

In addition, it seems now that more pieces of the core are being revealed, the river that runs through the village will begin to be dotted with small lanterns floating on the water. Some of them seem to be holding small notes. Try as you might to grab one, they’ll always just barely float out of reach.

Perhaps try sending one yourself and see what results you might get?

Occasionally in the village, you might hear the sound of drums and flutes - is that festival music? - though no matter how you search, you can’t find the source… yet.

[Watch your step! Mary, having shed herself of her shoes and stockings, has her long skirt bunched up in her hands and is gleefully tromping around in the beach’s shallows. She laughs as she jumps, kicking mud and water and covering her legs in splatters of wet sand.]

The beach, the beach, I’m playing at the beach!

[She sings a childish little tune as she plays, all but oblivious to everyone and everything around her.]

EARTH

[Not to be put off by the mere thought of cuddly, honey-loving bears, Mary has found a place for herself on the ground, in a clearing of heavy, rich dirt. Stick in hand, it’s clear that she’s drawing pictures—stick figure artistry of friends with flowers, holding hands and frolicking.]

AIR

Hello!

[Standing at the highest point she could reach, Mary’s hands are cupped around her mouth and she shouts as loud as she can, clearly enjoying the way her voice echoes and carries out into the great, windy expanse.]

Hello, hello, hello!

Is it the first time you've been to one?

[She just seems so excited about the beach... well, but maybe that's normal little kid enthusiasm? It's entirely possible.

Shirasu is just hanging out nearby, at the edge of the water-- apparently he's not as into all this as she is. Also he definitely helped teach her to climb a tree before captcha came for our lives.]

[withsadness]

Uh-huh!

[Mary burrows her feet deep into the soft sand. And yeah she's definitely a tree-climbing fiend now.]

I read about the beach in a book, once. I always wanted to go.

[wagashis]

Then I hope it's what you expected it to be.

[There's no smile on his face, but his tone's still gentle enough to suggest one.]

They say the sea air is better for you too, you know.

[leaberator]

[ lea was clearly just walking around a bit aimlessly, squinting a bit at the chipmunks (they're not wearing clothes so they don't talk, probably), but he perks up seeing his newest daughter friend ]

Hey, Mary. Whatcha drawin'?

AAAAAAH

[withsadness]

I'm draaaawing...I'm drawing a family. See, this is the Mother and this is the father, and this is their daughter. They love her very much, don't you think?

[She draws a neat rectangle around the trio.]

[leaberator]

[ he has to bend over a bit to properly look because he is so gosh darn tall, but he does because it is Important ]

Yeah, I can see it. S'it a family you know?

[specialdog]

[ Akane comes over and peeeeers over Mary's shoulder curiously. ]

Who're you drawing?

[withsadness]

I'm drawing my best friend Ib. Isn't she so pretty?

[It's hard to tell the difference between them. Well, the stick figure that must be Mary is wearing a dress, and the one who's hand she's holding is wearing a skirt and a shirt? They're both holding flowers.]

[specialdog]

Mmhmm, real pretty.

[ ... try to sound a little more passionate when you're encouraging a kid, akane, jeez. ]

How'd you meet her?

[nonbelligerent]

['sup, child. shess has his text-to-speech tablet out, so:]

What are you drawing?

[withsadness]

Oh! You can talk!

[This counts as talking. It counts!! Mary beams up at him, then looks back down at her drawing.]

I'm drawing all my new friends. I'll draw you, too!

[She starts with the hat. Because, well, of course.]

[nonbelligerent]

[of course.]

I'm honoured.

Who are your new friends?

[forefall]

[ Exploring is as exploring does. Four steps carefully in the sand and dodges the mud and water Mary kicks up. ]

Would you like to build a sand castle at the beach?

[ Perhaps a much more miniature one of the one that's already there at the beach. ]

[withsadness]

[No they have to go BIGGER. But Mary gasps.]

Really? Would you help me?

[forefall]

[ Four nods. ]

Of course. If you don't mind that I've never really had the chance to build one myself... but it shouldn't be too difficult.

[ Famous last words. ]

Air

[fujino]

... Hello.

[Fujino can't help but smile at Mary's innocent calls. She herself has made her way to the highest point letting the wind whip through her hair.]

We're both high up. Let's be careful okay?

[withsadness]

Uh-huh! I will be! If you get scared I'll save you!

[She doesn't seem like the kind of person who would get scared of heights, but, you never know.]

What's your name? I'm Mary!

[fujino]

That's a very courageous and heroic thing to say. I appreciate it.

[Her smile spreads a little wider, genuine this time.]

Mary-chan, it's nice to meet you. I'm Fujino.

Hellooooooo~!

[And lo, there is an answering call -- not from the tallest point Nana could reach, she's actually a bit lower than Mary, but she responses as loud as her voice will allow]

[withsadness]

[Mary absolutely does not see that there's another person responding, so thinking that she must be getting a call from the mountains themselves, she startles in delight.]

This place is the prettiest ever! Ever and ever and ever forever!

[daibanana]

Isn't it? I love it too!

[And of course Nana just shouts right back because this is obviously a great place to have a conversation.

Great job, girls, you're doing awesome]

[CHILD... Somewhere out there, there is probably an adult having a conniption at a kid making it this high up without proper supervision. But North isn't that adult, so.]

I don't think anyone can hear us from here.

[Idly. Just commenting.]

[withsadness]

You heard me.

[She would be included in "us" but, eh, you know. Either way, Mary looks over at North and beams.]

Don't you think it's so pretty?

[televised]

[Mary... North debates pointing that out, before deciding against it. She probably wouldn't get it, she thinks.]

It's [hm] beautiful. And peaceful. It's not a half bad place to be if you're looking to relax, I suppose.
