week zero: mingle

Week Zero
32 in Competition

On Monday morning, the sun rises on the sleepy village, and when the first ray of light touches the gates at each corner of the village, the previously tightly sealed doors open.

The barriers around the village fall, and leave it entirely open. Each cardinal direction will have a path exiting the village, taking the curious explorers who follow it on an adventure to new territories to be explored. They’ll find that each location that they arrive in appears to be associated with one of the elements. As the Signs had explained the day before, each of the participants in the game possesses an elemental assignment, whether they are aware of it or not.

When they approach the elemental areas, they’ll find themselves more in tune with their new powerset, as if the location invites them to take them out for a spin. The new areas appear to be perfect for training and learning how to use the new skills, or maybe if you’re curious you can discover which of those listed powers you’ve been granted.

Just try not to hurt yourself while you’re out there.

In addition, it seems now that more pieces of the core are being revealed, the river that runs through the village will begin to be dotted with small lanterns floating on the water. Some of them seem to be holding small notes. Try as you might to grab one, they’ll always just barely float out of reach.

Perhaps try sending one yourself and see what results you might get?

Occasionally in the village, you might hear the sound of drums and flutes - is that festival music? - though no matter how you search, you can’t find the source… yet.

[...that's a pretty promising threat, truthfully.]

You must be very out of your element, aren't you? [Lightly, trying not to sound too snobby but still a little curious.]

... [It takes her a moment before she growls:] Yes. Never was one for parties. [Admitting that much seems to be causing her quite some discomfort] Unlike you, who seem to be right where you like to be. Otherwise you wouldn't be asking random people to dance.

[Grim Eyes isn't introverted by any means, but she sure is leagues below KAoru's gregarious personality]

[Given that this doesn't even seem to shake him, she's not wrong. This is precisely where he's happiest and he folds his hands behind his back politely even as he continues keeping one eye on the dance floor and one on Grim Eyes herself.]

It's part of my job to make sure guests are enjoying themselves and to mingle. [Which is true enough.] But parties can be fun if they're entertaining. So far this one has been the most entertaining thing here.

[So this is part of his job back at home...hm. Maybe he can make this worthwhile]

...fine. Let's give this a chance, just once.

[Looks like she's willing to dance]

[A new experience, it seems. There's a nod before he figures out how to grab her hand (paw? whichever, really) and guide her along.]

We'll even start slow to teach you the steps. They're simple to pick up on.

I'd like to think I learn fast.

[She doesn't learn new things as fast as she should, but shre sure isn't going to give up!]

That will make this easier then. [Or so he hopes. Once there, he just arranges for space.] As long as you remember to count and only one person is leading, it's simple to follow. One foot at a time, too. That's where a lot of people trip themselves up.

[Slowly, Grim Eyes starts getting the hang of it -- although she tries to take the lead all the time. That's just how she is, she's very used to being the one giving orders]

Didn't think dancing was all about counting all the time. It's distracting.

[More like it's matter of time, Grim Eyes]

But this isn't as bad as I thought it'd be.

[Every time she tries to take the lead, Kaoru's correctly her so that she can't. Let yourself be led, it's much easier.]

It's partially that and partially following a rhythm. Some dances don't require as much counting but it's the easiest way to learn. Dancing is also useful for learning your limits for balance and grace.

[Maybe saying that will make it sound more useful to her.]

[She has to remind herself over and over Kaoru is the teacher here. Suck it up, Grim Eyes, not being in charge for once is good for you]

I guess it'd be useful for that, although if I tell anyone that back at home they would doubt it's effective at all.

[The thought of she trying to test other people's balance and grace through dancing is kind of funny to her]
twinsightful: (ALERT ♜ What's up?)

[personal profile] twinsightful 2019-06-12 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
That's why you show them and prove them wrong. [There is no greater motivation than spite, after all.]

Are all people back where you're from like you? [...gruff, non-dancers, etc.]

It depends who you talk with, pretty much. If you feel like finding a friendlier hyena, it's not that difficult.

[True, they are in general a serious species, but personalities are a thing -- although the vast majority are wary as hell at outsiders]

My grandmother would be the dancing type if she wasn't more than a hundred years old, I'm sure.
twinsightful: (SNEAK ♜ Don't mind me)

[personal profile] twinsightful 2019-06-12 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
Given that you're the first hyena I've ever met, forgive me for not really knowing about your culture. [This is somewhat serious at least. The animal population here has helped expose him to the idea there are worlds this all makes sense.]

What do you do for fun then?

[personal profile] liversandhyenas 2019-06-12 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Me? Uh... [She mumbles a few unintelligible words before finally admitting:] I don't get much free time for myself. I'm always having to watch over my hunt group, and then Boneclaw Mother tells me to do one thing or another.

It's not often I can really do something for fun. Pretty embarrassing to admit being here's the most free time I had in ages.

[She's competent and with excellent standing among her people, so of course she's busy often. She doesn't mind, but free time and having a life? Not really much of an option]

I should thank you for taking the time to do this for me, so thanks.
twinsightful: (EMBARRASSED ♜ Stooop)

[personal profile] twinsightful 2019-06-12 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
[There are words here he doesn't quite get such as Boneclaw but he gets the general sense. It explains a little about Grim Eyes herself.]

I don't think you're the only one. A few others here have found the same thing, and so...perhaps it's for reasons like that that this place isn't as horrendous as it could be. [But there's a smile.] It's been my pleasure to help.

[It had started out teasing but now he means it, at least.]
