week zero: mingle

Week Zero
32 in Competition

On Monday morning, the sun rises on the sleepy village, and when the first ray of light touches the gates at each corner of the village, the previously tightly sealed doors open.

The barriers around the village fall, and leave it entirely open. Each cardinal direction will have a path exiting the village, taking the curious explorers who follow it on an adventure to new territories to be explored. They’ll find that each location that they arrive in appears to be associated with one of the elements. As the Signs had explained the day before, each of the participants in the game possesses an elemental assignment, whether they are aware of it or not.

When they approach the elemental areas, they’ll find themselves more in tune with their new powerset, as if the location invites them to take them out for a spin. The new areas appear to be perfect for training and learning how to use the new skills, or maybe if you’re curious you can discover which of those listed powers you’ve been granted.

Just try not to hurt yourself while you’re out there.

In addition, it seems now that more pieces of the core are being revealed, the river that runs through the village will begin to be dotted with small lanterns floating on the water. Some of them seem to be holding small notes. Try as you might to grab one, they’ll always just barely float out of reach.

Perhaps try sending one yourself and see what results you might get?

Occasionally in the village, you might hear the sound of drums and flutes - is that festival music? - though no matter how you search, you can’t find the source… yet.

No, that's–

[ Her feet don't miss a beat but Junna fumbles with her words. It's a strange sort of contemporaneous duality. ]

I feel better in it now that I'm dancing. It was when I was standing around that I felt the most out of place.

It's strange how that works, isn't it? All it takes is choreography or a script to suddenly make you feel comfortable with pretending to be more than what you are.

[...

It's not that Nana doesn't understand what she means. Most of the girls in their class experience a similar sensation, only feeling like their complete selves when they're performing in some way.

But still, there's one part of that statement Nana can't let go, and it's--]

For me, I can't feel completely at ease unless it's a partner I like dancing with.

[ Junna tilts her head, curious.

it's not so much she's oblivious as it is she's missing the intent. after all, who could possibly be interested in what nana is actually interested in when they've just been freshly kidnapped? ]

That goes without saying, doesn't it? No one wants to dance with someone who they don't like, or someone who can't keep up with them. There's a certain synergy required to make a performance work.

I think that's why people like Saijou-san and Tendou-san always managed to stand out so much.. you'd feel it too, wouldn't you? They're both near insufferable under any normal circumstances but when you're on stage with them.. it's so comfortable it feels like you've always been the closest of friends.

[Well, it was a foolish statement on Nana's part anyway. The vague disappointment disappears into relief almost immediately]

Maya-chan and Claudine-chan...

[The nostalgia hits her as she mutters the names of their classmates, not enough to distract her steps, but her eyes trail upward with a hum all the same. It hasn't even been a week but it feels like a lifetime in its own way.

She dislikes that.]

Yes, they work well because they feed into each other on the stage. They're perfect partners in that sense.

[Maya, who stands at the top of the mountain, with Claudine the enraged zealot always answering her goddess's call. Cute, really]

[ They all feel so far away, and to even consider that is a sobering thought in and of itself. But as long as the music still plays their steps stay with the song– never once losing momentum even with the way their own moods drop. ]

They manage just fine no matter who they're performing with but..

[ Junna isn't a gossip, but at this point this is less gossip and more fact. ]

They do have a special sort of chemistry with one another. But that isn't really a surprise to any of us at this point.

Oh they do have quite a bit of chemistry. I don't think I've showed you how many pictures I have of Claudine-chan in the background, pouting at Maya-chan~

[Listen, Junna might not be here to gossip, but Nana certainly is. Though of course every line she delivers is done with fondness.]

Poor Claudine-chan! I think she assumes no one notices.

She assumes no one notices because she's so busy watching Tendou-san she doesn't even have time to take a long, hard look at herself.

[ Junna wrinkles her nose, like she doesn't care for the whole ordeal. ]

What's worse, is that her tunnel vision is so narrow she doesn't realize that Tendou-san is just as shameless.

[Ffff Junna getting into the spirit almost trips Nana, if only because she's trying to hide how her shoulders shake with laughter.]

I'm sure with enough time they'll figure it out.

After all, we have plenty of shameless people in our class. It seems to be our speciality, in fact.
