Week Zero

On Monday morning, the sun rises on the sleepy village, and when the first ray of light touches the gates at each corner of the village, the previously tightly sealed doors open.

The barriers around the village fall, and leave it entirely open. Each cardinal direction will have a path exiting the village, taking the curious explorers who follow it on an adventure to new territories to be explored. They’ll find that each location that they arrive in appears to be associated with one of the elements. As the Signs had explained the day before, each of the participants in the game possesses an elemental assignment, whether they are aware of it or not.

When they approach the elemental areas, they’ll find themselves more in tune with their new powerset, as if the location invites them to take them out for a spin. The new areas appear to be perfect for training and learning how to use the new skills, or maybe if you’re curious you can discover which of those listed powers you’ve been granted.

Just try not to hurt yourself while you’re out there.

In addition, it seems now that more pieces of the core are being revealed, the river that runs through the village will begin to be dotted with small lanterns floating on the water. Some of them seem to be holding small notes. Try as you might to grab one, they’ll always just barely float out of reach.

Perhaps try sending one yourself and see what results you might get?

Occasionally in the village, you might hear the sound of drums and flutes - is that festival music? - though no matter how you search, you can’t find the source… yet.

Not... really? Sort of? What do you mean?

[ Hisoka was certainly encouraging, but it wasn't a challenge, Minato thinks. But his perspective of things have been wildly skewed before. ]

How is he related to this? Or did you decide to pick this up after observing him?

Hm... I watched him juggle knives. He said he'd teach me how to juggle if I could catch the knives properly. To stay safe, you know?

[ It's a valid concern and criteria, for Minato to master safely catching before he proceeds to the next step of catching and throwing multiple objects at a time. ]

[shess is kind of concerned about this kid interacting with hisoka, but it's not exactly his place to interfere, so...]

I don't mind throwing or catching.

[ Somebody warn Minato about Hisoka, he thinks Hisoka is cool... ]

Alright. How 'bout you throw the set to me first? Then I'll do the same for you.

[nonbelligerent]

[he nods, but before he does so (as he'll have to free up a hand from his tablet):]

If I can return the question, what do you think of him?

[and with that, he tosses a knife. very carefully.]

[ Minato's method of catching a knife is to clap it out of the air just before it hits his face and takes out an eye. One day, he'll try something new, but this works and he will practice what he's able to. ]

Hm... I think he's pretty cool? He was willing to teach me, after all. And gave me a supply of knives to practice with, too.

[nonbelligerent]

[good job, minato. shess would've found it very awkward if he had to explain how he accidentally took out your eye.]

Perhaps he should've offered to teach you how to catch knives, in that case.

[compendiem]

[ Minato would have just brushed his bangs over the afflicted eye and say nothing about it, no need to bring it up, ever. He lets the knife drop into the basket at his feet, before readying himself again. ]

Is my method no good? With technique... what feels most comfortable and works for the individual is what's best, isn't it?

[ Minato, the Hisoka stan: "Hisoka probably didn't teach me on purpose, because he wants me to find the method that works best for me myself" ]

It's not a criticism of your method. I just felt that between two options, you would teach the more dangerous of the two and leave the student to their own devices with the safer one.

[a pause, before he gently throws another knife.]

[compendiem]

...That's a good point. Usually, I just feel things out for myself, and do whatever works. Formal instruction sounds like a pain for both sides...

[ Being taught, especially, must boring for the other party, and Minato tends to learn as he goes along. With his own odd method, he can at least catch the knives a lot easier, but there's also a difference between the way Shess throws them, and how Hisoka did. ]

The next one, can you throw as fast as you can? That way, it's a straight line, with less of a trajectory to account for.

[ Hisoka might have been trying to kill him flinging knives at 2390583904 mph at Minato's face, but he chooses to believe that this is also benevolence, pardoning Minato from having to deal with a curved trajectory. ]

I don't think you want me to throw it literally as fast as I can. Not to be arrogant, but it'd most likely kill you.

[he may be depowered, but...]

[ A part of Minato wants to take that chance. Another part of him wants to stay alive long enough to present all these apples to Swift Wind. ]

Alright. How about... 32% faster?

[nonbelligerent]

[he pauses.]

All right.

[no promises that it's actually 32% faster, but when he throws the next knife, it's at least in a straight line?]

[compendiem]

[ Minato can't tell 32% from 1000%, seeing as it goes directly towards his face and he only has reflex to work off of—- he catches the knife, same clapping method as before, but has to lean back to keep it from taking off his nose this time.

...He lowers his hand and says, somewhat distractedly ]

If I'm juggling, I can't use both hands, can I? This way is no good.

[ What is he practicing for... ]

To be honest, I'm not sure if catching knives like this really has anything to do with juggling. You may be better off practicing actual juggling. That way, you can learn to consistently catch the hilt.

... Perhaps with pens? Pretend one end is the blade and the other is the hilt.

[ That is such a judgey icon, I'm losing it


But Shess does have a point; with a pen, he can toss it up and down himself and start off as slow and careful as he needs to, instead of relying on danger to keep his senses sharp and the ultimatum of "catch this or die"

One problem: ]

Do you know where I could find pens?

[ The next closest thing he can think of with two ends is the nails out of his nailbat. ]

Yes. Milla showed me where to find writing materials in the library.

[ Minato, but also me, internally: we have a library??? ]

...I guess I shouldn't be too greedy with the apples. We can stop for today. If you have some time, maybe you can show me the [ library ] writing materials?

[education doesn't stop just because you're dead, minato!!]

Yes, of course.

[ Education stopped the moment Minato maxed out his intelligence and proceeded to sleep through class and do no homework.

Minato smiles gratefully, and brings the basket of apples over so he can collect all his things together- both apples and knives. ]

Do you want one? As thanks for your help.

[ An apple or a knife, he doesn't specify which, just holds up the basket as a whole. ]

[he'll take an apple because he's not questionable, maybe. thanks!]

[ Maybe. But it's an apple Shess picked out himself, so he can have what he wants. Minato takes a detour to drop things off at his house (no food in the library, etc, and maybe knives apply too) before he follows Shess to go find pens. ]

Mm, yeah. He thinks I'm a delinquent.

[ he's not wrong. ]
